History
The Trakehner was developed near the beginning of the 18th century. There was a need for a lighter cavalry horse with greater speed and stamina, consequently the ruler of the time - king Wilhiem set about refining the heavier indigenous horses that had been previously used for pulling heavy weaponry. King Wilhiem chose the best horses from his royal stud farms and moved them to the “Gestut Trakehner” where an intensive breeding programme began. Arabian, Turkish and thoroughbred bloodlines were introduced and this is when the Trakehner breed started to develop.
