Te Araroa is a trampling track that stretches from Cape Reinga in the far north of the North Island to Bluff in the South of the south island of New Zealand. The trek stretches 3000kms and take approximately 120 days to walk. The Te Araroa Trust and eight regional trusts are currently building the trail by joining a variety of smaller trails together, and when complete, it will be the longest, long distance trampling trail in the world.
The trek is due to be completed in February 2011 and will provide trekkers with the opportunity to see New Zealand in its natural state. The trail combines mountain trekking, scrambling, river crossings, lakes, valleys, volcanoes and townships and in parts is demanding and of a difficult walk standard. Weather conditions and terrain often means the trails are only suitable for the physically fit.
The tracks often have camping facilities and huts along the way but food and fresh water can be scarce for up to 10 days so if you are planning on trekking the whole trail, you must plan ahead.
