A “lead rein” or “first pony” are terms used to describe a type of pony suitable for a novice child rider.

A lead rein or first pony can be any type of pony, usually of small stature, between 9 hands and 12hands, and of a mature age. These ponies should have a varied amount of qualities. Lead rein or first ponies should be a genuine and confidence giving, fun to ride and look after, so the jockey grows more confident and comfortable in the saddle and safe when handling a pony.
Lead rein or first ponies must have certain attributes, a safe pony that has a calm, kind and friendly disposition, which has fantastic manners, that is good to handle in and out of the stable, easy to groom and tack up, a pony that doesn’t kick or bite and that is uncomplicated to look after in general.
Ideally a lead rein or first pony should be bomb proof - it is undesirable for them to buck, rear, bolt or be spookey. A pony that has had lots of experience and that is used to being handled by children is preferable.
