The name “hack” is a word used to describe a horse or pony that is suitable to be used for “hacking out” general pleasure riding in the countryside, hence the term “happy hacker”.

A hack can be a horse or pony of any type or height that understands, and is tolerant of the obstacles and challenges you can be faced with whilst out hacking. A hack is usually a mature horse or pony that has had plenty of experience as a riding horse. A hack must be able to be ridden alone or in company, a horse that is happy to be at the front or back of the ride. A hack should be exceptionally good with traffic, not easily spooked, and have a calm and steady nature.When out hacking you can be faced with walkers and their dogs, gates to open and close, and many open fields.

Many horses and ponies that are used for hacking are steady, quiet cobs that have a cooperative and kind temperament, often competition horses with a calm disposition that are retired are perfect as they have lots of life experience.

Riders who take part in hacking are often novice riders, as it is a good approach to learn horsemanship and gain experience.
