Foal is a name given to any type of baby horse or pony of either gender in its first year of life.

Horses and ponies are prey animals, so they need to be able to run away from predators, therefore foals are normally standing within their first hour following birth, and can usually trot and canter in just a few hours so if necessary the foal can flee from danger.

When a foal is nursing it can be known as a “suckling” and when weaned the foal can be known as a “weanling”.

Foals normally get handled by humans at an early age, so they become familiar with people, normally the first thing a foal is taught is to wear a head collar/halter, and be led by a person, this is called “halter breaking”. Foals can start becoming accustomed to things they will have to undergo during their life time from having its feet picked out to being loaded into a horse box or trailer.

Normally horses and ponies have good memories so it’s important they are handled correctly and not taught things as a foal that would be unwanted traits in a mature animal.
