Block paving can be a very beautiful addition to your home and is often a less expensive alternative to hiring a contractor to pave your driveway for you. Block paving driveways can actually be much easier than you might expect when you have all the proper materials and tools on hand.
You will need to know the dimensions of the area that you intend to pave. This will help you determine how much materials you will need to purchase. Take this figure with you to the home improvement store you shop at and a customer service representative will be able to assist you in selecting the appropriate amount of base material, concreting sand, fine sand, and edge restraints.
Remove six inches of topsoil from the area that you are going to pave. You should also make sure that for every yard there is at least a one inch slope to help with drainage.
Use a plate vibrator against the entire surface of the soil, taking note of any low or soft areas and filling them with a base material such as crushed rock pieces. Once you have covered the entire area with the vibrator, you can then lay 3-4 inches of the same base material over the area.
Place some form of restraining walls along the edges of the area you plan to pave. For this you can use edging or concrete kerb. Cement these into place so that they are held firmly in place.
Lay 2/5 inches of concreting sand over the sub base material and smooth this material with a long beam or board. Then carefully place the blocks you have chosen into the sand. Use the vibrator plate again, running over the rocks so that the sand is pushed between the spaces around the blocks.
Use very fine sand over the blocks and brush it over them with a broom until it is spread evenly. This will fill the cracks and joints. Now you can run the place vibrator again over the sand until it has settled between the rocks and the block paving driveway is finished.
